Ultrasounds in Pregnancy
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging tool that uses sound waves to create pictures of your developing baby. At Premier Care for Women, we use ultrasound to monitor your baby’s growth and development, and to provide reassurance and guidance throughout your pregnancy.
We are proud to offer in-office ultrasound using a state-of-the-art, high-resolution machine, providing clear, detailed images for both clinical accuracy and your peace of mind.
When Are Ultrasounds Performed?
While every pregnancy is unique, here is a general outline of the routine ultrasounds typically offered during prenatal care:
Dating Ultrasound (6–9 weeks)
- Ordered at your initial pregnancy visit
- Confirms the presence of a pregnancy in the uterus
- Determines gestational age and estimated due date
- Checks for a heartbeat and number of embryos
Nuchal Translucency (NT) Screening (11–13 weeks)
- Optional first trimester screening for chromosomal conditions
- Measures the clear space at the back of the baby’s neck
- Often combined with blood work for more accurate results
Anatomy Ultrasound (18–22 weeks)
- A detailed scan of the baby’s anatomy
- Checks the brain, spine, heart, kidneys, limbs, and more
- Evaluates the placenta, amniotic fluid, and umbilical cord
- Can usually determine the baby’s sex, if desired
Growth or Follow-Up Ultrasounds (as needed)
- May be ordered later in pregnancy to:
- Monitor baby’s growth and position
- Check amniotic fluid levels or placental function
- Re-evaluate any concerns seen in earlier scans
- Not all patients require these unless clinically indicated
Is Ultrasound Safe?
Yes. Ultrasound is widely used during pregnancy and is considered safe for both you and your baby when performed by trained professionals using appropriate settings.
